DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: New York City

Every traveller should have New York City on their bucket list. It’s the city that never sleeps and has starred in some of the most influential and iconic films, books and songs of the past century. From Jay Gatsby to Carrie Bradshaw, not forgetting Bob Dylan, Andy Warhol and Don Draper, there is absolutely something for everyone in New York.

Find out more about New York’s melting pot in the Immigration Museum at Ellis Island. Almost half the current population of the USA is descended from an immigrant who passed through the arrival centre in New York harbour. New York still has an incredible range of ethnicities and cultures represented as a result of this open door policy. While you’re cruising round the harbour, it’s only a short boat ride to the Statue of Liberty. It’s not hard to imagine how inspiring this would have seemed to weary travellers after the long sea journey from Europe.

While visitors flock to New York’s Central Park, a more interesting outdoor experience is a walk along the High Line. This former railway track has now been converted in to a public walkway, with planting, lawns, play areas and performance spaces along the way. Some of the covered sections also host art and video installations, as well as food carts and pop up cafes.
