Located on the southern tip of New Zealand’s North Island, the capital Wellington manages to combine the relaxed atmosphere of a small town with the cultural buzz of a big city. The city has an incredible food scene with gourmet coffee shops and craft beer bars seemingly on every corner. Wellington also has enviable views, facing out over a huge natural harbour with mountains behind it.

To get your bearings, a trip up Mouth Victoria is highly recommended. Known as Matairangi in the Maori language, it stands to the east of the city and gives amazing views out to sea, over the city centre to the hills and mountains behind.

Another must see in Wellington is Te Papa museum. This museum covers all things New Zealand, from traditional Maori culture to the Anzac campaigns of World War One. Highlights include the Maori meeting house, the preserved body of a giant squid and an earthquake simulator that explains the geology of the Pacific Rim.
