DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Brisbane
Looking over Moreton Bay on Australia’s Gold Coast is the city of Brisbane. The area is believed to have been inhabited for over 32,000 years with archaeological evidence suggesting it was a settled by several Aboriginal groups before Europeans arrived in 1799. Brisbane is now one of Australia’s biggest cities, with a particular richness of cultural activities.
In the city centre, get a fix on Australian culture with a trip to the Queensland Cultural Centre. Take a tour of the Gallery of Modern Art or learn more about Brisbane’s past at the Queensland Museum. Alternatively find cutting-edge theatre, dance and music at the Brisbane Powerhouse, a former power station transformed into a multi-purpose arts venue. Finish off your day at Brisbane’s many excellent restaurants and rooftop cocktail bars.
Outside of the city, you don’t have to travel far to experience some stunning scenery. A short bus ride from the city centre is the D’Aguilar National Park. Spot platypus, turtles and snakes at the Wildlife Centre, or trek into the bush for an overnight camp. Another great option is to catch a ferry to the many islands off the coast of Brisbane. Moreton Island is a huge sand island with sandy beaches and secret lagoons; pack your snorkel to explore the Tangalooma Wrecks – 15 ships deliberately sunk to create an artificial reef.
