DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Budapest
Cut in two by the Danube river, Budapest is actually 3 cities combined into one. Buda, Pest and Óbuda united in 1873 to form the capital of Hungary. With a fascinating history, great food and a bustling cafe culture, Budapest is one of Europe’s top destinations.
On Castle Hill in Buda, you can explore the historic buildings of Buda Castle and the Fisherman’s Bastion. Built at the end of the 19th century, the terrace has spectacular views over the city. The seven towers that form the Fisherman’s Bastion represent the seven Magyar tribes that originally formed the Hungarian people. Over in Pest, go along the waterfront to visit the Hungarian Parliament Building and enjoy views of the Danube from Liberty Bridge.
Budapest is also known for its thermal springs, which are very popular with residents and tourists alike. The Earth’s crust is particularly thin under the city, meaning there are hundreds of naturally heated water sources. The biggest spa with ten indoor pools and three more outside is the Széchenyi thermal bath. Quietly soak in the grand communal baths or splash around in the more relaxed swimming pools.
