DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Honolulu

One of the most remote cities on Earth at over 2500 miles from mainland America, Honolulu in Hawaii is a great place to get away from it all.

Honolulu is the capital of Hawaii, which was the last state to become part of the USA in 1959. The Waikiki area of the city is a great place to start exploring the city. There’s a beach with surfing and other watersports, lots of cafes and restaurants as well as a major shopping centre. Head downtown to visit Iolani Palace, the only royal palace in the USA. Built in 1879 by King Kalakaua it aimed to show Hawaii as a modern country with a strong monarchy. The palace is impressive but it failed in its aims and the islands were soon annexed by the United States.

Hawaii is famous for its landscapes and tropical forests which can seem far away in the heart of Honolulu. However there are flashes of wild Hawaii to be found. Manoa waterfall is a 25-minute hike from suburban Honolulu. Stop off in the Makiki Heights neighbourhood (where Barack Obama grew up) for spectacular views over the city and ocean.
