DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Moscow

Moscow is a city in the midst of change. Contrasting historic architecture with some of the tallest buildings in Europe, Moscow has culture, political intrigue, Soviet suburbs and urban forests.

At the centre of Moscow is Red Square. Here you can visit the Kremlin and see the seat of Russian power, or wonder at the brightly coloured onion domes of St Basil’s cathedral. Queue up to view the preserved body of Lenin which has been on display in a mausoleum since 1924, despite repeated calls to bury the body. The graves of Joseph Stalin, Leonid Brezhnev and Yuri Gagarin are also located nearby, alongside other major Communist figures.

For more Communist iconography, visit the V.D.N.K.h, a park dedicated to celebrating Soviet achievements. As well as gardens and spectacular jewelled fountains, there are pavilions built in the style of various Soviet republics. Head to the enormous newly opened aquarium, or see rockets and moon explorers in the Cosmonaut pavilion. Alternatively, check out “My History Park” which gives a version of history that is more palatable to the current Russian government than the actual facts.
