In the middle of New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown is a bucket-list destination for thrill seekers. With bungee jumping, power boating and luging amongst many others, even the most hardened adventurer will find something to get their heart racing. For more gentle kicks, the stunning lakeside location and surrounding mountains offer incredible scenery, even by New Zealand’s superlative standards.

Often credited as the home of bungee jumping, Queenstown has several jumps. The ultimate is the Nevis Highwire, which takes place on a cable car suspended 134 meters above the river. With 8.5 seconds of freefall, it’s not for the faint-hearted. There’s also Kawarau Bridge, which is thought of as the first commercial bungee jump, and the Ledge, which overlooks the town itself. Both of these are lower than Nevis, but might not feel like it when you are standing on the edge!

There’s also plenty to keep you entertained in town. Try the frisbee golf courses at Queenstown Gardens and Tucker Beach for an interesting twist on a stroll around the park, or catch a ride around the lake on the TSS Earnslaw. This steam-powered ship was once the main form of transport around Lake Wakatipu, but now it offers a variety of tours and cruises, often including a food option or a stop at a remote farm. There are several vineyards and breweries around the area; many welcome visitors for tours and tastings. Alternatively, settle down in one of the many great bars in Queenstown to create your own craft selection.
