DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Sharm El Sheikh
The purpose built resorts of Sharm El Sheikh offer visitors access to some of the best beaches and water for diving. However there’s also plenty to do onland as well.
For those wishing to explore the Red Sea, there are some amazing underwater sights within a few hours boat trip from Sharm. Dive down to the wrecks of the Thistlegorm and the Dunraven or the steep cliffs of coral at Thomas Reef. There’s also plenty to see for less experienced divers and snorkellers just off the shore. Several reefs are near enough to the coast to be accessed from the beach.
Away from the town, the Sinai peninsula has some great day trip options. The Coloured Canyon is an incredible twisting maze of multicoloured rocks, eroded by desert winds to expose the different layers formed over time. Alternatively, venture to St Catherine’s Monastery. It is supposedly built around the burning bush spotted by Moses, at the foot of the mountain where he received the 10 Commandments.
