DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Rio De Janeiro
Nicknamed the “Wonderful City”, Rio De Janeiro certainly lives up to its billing. Nestled between towering mountains and the wild Atlantic ocean, it’s a city that knows how to live the good life.
The former capital of Brazil is probably most famous for its annual carnival which takes place at the start of lent. If you can’t make it to town during the carnival period then you can still get a taste at the samba schools rehersals and summer events. In the run up to carnival, many of the schools hold dress rehersals inside the sambadrome which are free to attend.
The other icon of Rio is the Christ the Redeemer Statue. Perched on Corvocado Mountain 710 meters above the city, the statue is visible from almost everywhere in the city, even at night when it is lit in such a way to appear to float over Rio. The mountain is incredibly steep and is best reached by a cog railway that transports visitors to the base of the statue, but a walk back down through the Tijuca National Park, the largest urban rainforest in the world, is highly recommended.
