DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Brussels
As the capital of Belgium and the administrative home of the EU, Brussels has a reputation for seriousness. Nonetheless there’s plenty for visitors to explore, from baroque city squares to quirky museums.
The centre of Brussels in the square at Grand Place. Built in the 15th century, the gothic City Hall towers over the cobbled square, while the other sides are home to various ornately decorated guild halls. The square is hidden in a jumble of narrow medieval alleys which give a nice contrast to the openness of the Grand Place. Hang out at one of the many cafes in the square and come back at different times – the square often hosts markets, concerts, floral displays and illuminations.
One of Brussels more unique galleries is the Comic Art Museum. There are displays dedicated to Tintin and the Smurfs, as well as the history and development of comic strips. For true comic aficionados, there’s an extensive library of specialist and rare publications.
