DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Bruges

One of Europe’s most picturesque medieval towns, Bruges in Belgium is a treat for history fans. The town is famous for its many canals, which snake around gothic spires and past cobbled squares. It’s also gained a new following as the location of the cult film “In Bruges”.

The belfry overlooking the Market Square is one of the most recognisable buildings in the town. Climb the 366 steps to the top for amazing views over Bruge and out to sea. The 47 bells inside the tower are arranged around a keyboard so can be played by one person – check on the notice board outside to see when the next performance is scheduled.

Belgium is noted for its chocolate, beer and lace and all three can be found in abundance in Bruge. Look out for chocolate shops that make their chocolate on the premises. These shops use the better quality ingredients and have more interesting flavours. Many bars serve a good selection of Belgian beers, but look for a traditional “brown cafe” for an authentic experience.
