DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Bucharest
Once known as “Little Paris” for its elegant and sophisticated buildings, Romania’s capital Bucharest is emerging from decades under Communist dictatorship. It’s now a prosperous and vibrant city that is ideal for a weekend break.
To get an insight in to Romania’s communist years book a tour of the Palace of Parliament. One of the largest government buildings in the world, it contains over 3000 rooms and is still being built. This neoclassical behemoth also contains a modern art museum as well as several government departments. It also hosts events and conferences, yet still most of the building is unused.
On a sunny day take a picnic to Cişmigiu Garden, the largest and oldest of Bucharest’s many parks. Stroll through shady woodland areas and hire a boat to splash around on the lake. You can also learn more about Romanian culture by walking through the Writer’s Alley, which contains statues of some of Romania’s best authors. Alternatively, settle down at the cafe for some serious people watching.
