DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Christ The Redeemer

Towering over the Rio De Janeiro with his outstretched arms reaching 28 meters across, the statue of Christ the Redeemer that overlooks the city is surely one of the most iconic images of Brazil.

Construction began in 1922 and was finished by 1931. The statue stands 30 meters tall and is perched on the 700 meter high Corcovado mountain – “The Hunchback”. Rising steeply from the city streets below, Corcovado is visible from most parts of Rio De Janeiro, and at night the brightly lit statue seems to float over the city.

The most popular way to reach the base of the statue is by cog railway which takes around 20 minutes to climb the steep tracks. You can also take a bus from downtown Rio or get a taxi to the top. The statue is located in Tijuca National Park amongst the last part of tropical rainforest in the city so it’s even possible to hike up forest trails.
