DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Frankfurt
Frankfurt is Germany’s business powerhouse, so much so that it is nicknamed “Mainhattan” after the river Main that flows through the city. Some of Europe’s most futuristic skyscrapers can be found here, and the city is particularly well known for hosting huge trade shows and conferences. However there is still plenty for the non-business traveller to see. Frankfurt airport is a major hub so can easily be fitted in to a long haul trip as a stopover.
A visit to the Kaiserdom cathedral is well worth it. You can see where Holy Roman Emperors were crowned in medieval times, as well as climb the 95 meter tall bell tower. If that isn’t high enough, get an express elevator up 200 meters to the viewing platform of the Main Tower. Go in the late afternoon to watch the sunset with a cocktail at the bar on the 53rd floor.
Frankfurt is dominated by the river, so a great way to see the city quickly is on a river cruise. You can take a standard boat with an audio commentary or choose a specialist tour. Go for a tasty brunch cruise or sample the city’s famous sausages on a barbecue boat trip. Visit in July or August for Frankfurt’s spectacular firework displays, the river boats are guaranteed the best view!
