DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Shanghai

Shanghai is the most populous city in the world, with something to offer even the most jaded traveler. From towering skyscrapers to art deco confections, there’s also fine dining, amazing nightlife and a thriving cultural scene. After all, 24 million inhabitants can’t be wrong.

Get your bearings with a stroll along the Bund. This waterfront area was developed heavily by British and French traders in the early 20th Century. Much of the buildings are art deco or neoclassical style, giving the street a curiously European feel. Nowadays the street has a great view of the futuristic skyscrapers of the Pudong district and some of the most exclusive boutiques, restaurants and bars in the city.

For a taste of old Shanghai, visit the Yuyuan Gardens. Built by powerful Ming Dynasty officials in the 16th century, the garden has beautiful groves of fragrant blossoms, fish ponds and several ornamental buildings. One of the buildings is the Mid-Lake Pavillion Tea House. Cross the zig-zag bridge designed to deter bad spirits to reach the tea house and be rewarded by a huge selection of tea varieties to sample.
