DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Seattle
Known as the home of Starbucks and Microsoft, Seattle in the USA is quite different close up. Small indie businesses thrive next to microbreweries and serious coffee shops, while every other street corner seems to have an interesting mural or niche shop.
If you are keen to see the site of the first ever Starbucks, head to Pike Place Market. The market itself is heaven for anyone with an interest in food, with fantastic local produce on every counter. Stock up for a special picnic or stock up on something long lasting to take home. The most famous stall in the market is probably the fishmonger, where workers pass the fish up and down with precision throwing and catching to ensure the customer gets their order as quickly as possible, even if it’s the other end of the display.
The other iconic landmark in Seattle is the Space Needle. Built in 1962 for the World’s Fair, it’s still an impressive sight. The spaceship-like viewing deck is a great place to get your bearings and on a clear day visitors can enjoy views out across the Puget Sound and the Pacific ocean, over the city to Mount Rainier, one of the highest and most impressive peaks in the USA.
