DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest

Our penultimate stop for Wilderness Week are the forests of central Africa. Straddling an area split between Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo these dense and sparsely populated jungles are home to some of the most incredible creatures on Earth – wild mountain gorillas.

Uganda is the easiest place to see the gorillas, with the biggest gorilla population as well as an established tour industry. Anyone wishing to see gorillas must book with a specialist tour agency and obtain a permit to enter Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. This ensures visitors are able to see these special animals without disrupting their routines or damaging their habitat. Visitors are also encouraged to get involved with local community schemes which help provide alternative employment to discourage logging and poaching.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest definitely lives up to its name, with some areas in permanent twilight due to the dense tree cover. Your guide will carry a machete, not to defend you against wild animals but to cut through the thick vegetation to reach the clearings where the gorillas like to hang out. Although the terrain is hard going, the gorillas are constantly tracked by park rangers so a sighting is virtually guaranteed.
