DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Warsaw
Warsaw is a city that excels at reinvention. One of the most impressive European capitals at the turn of the 20th century, Poland was devastated during World War 2 with Warsaw suffering particularly badly. Warsaw remained as the capital throughout the Soviet years, but since joining the European Union in 2004 the country and the city have boomed.
Exploring Warsaw’s old town is a strange experience. Many of the buildings were destroyed during the war and what stands today is mostly modern reconstructions. Look out for plaques and information panels to find out how the buildings were painstakingly rebuilt to recapture the granduer of Warsaw’s historic centre.
Another iconic structure constructed in the post war period is the Palace of Culture and Science, built as a gift from the Russians. At 231 metres it is the highest building in Poland and is a strange mix of neoclassicism, baroque frills and Soviet austerity. Nowadays it contains meeting halls, theatres, a cinema and an observation deck with great views over the city.
