Ever since the California gold rush, people have been flocking to San Francisco. While you might not make your fortune, sights like the Golden Gate bridge soaring over the bay are more than worth the journey.

After the bridge, San Francisco’s most recognisable landmark is Alcatraz prison. Built on a small island in the middle of the bay, it was once home to some of America’s most notorious criminals. The audio tour of the island is an excellent way to find out more about the history of the island and the prisoners held there.

For a more free-wheeling day out, head to the intersection of Haight and Ashbury Street to see where the counter-culture revolution started in the 1960s. Many of the shops and cafes in this area still follow a hippy ethos, with vintage band posters and organic farming manuals aplenty. Check out the Bound Together Anarchist Book Collective to browse radical comics, alternative lifestyle books and anti-authoritarian literature.
