DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Busan
South Korea’s second city, Busan, has enough attractions to keep even the most jaded traveler interested. Surrounded by mountains on one side and the sea on the other, there’s views and beaches aplenty. Inside the city, you’ll find amazing cafes, bars and restaurants serving fantastically fresh seafood. Busan is also a cultural hub with an annual film festival and several notable galleries and museums.
For an interesting twist on the standard gallery trip, head up to the mountainside area of Gamcheon. Since 2009 the area has been home to several street murals, with more being constantly installed. The residents of the area responded by painting their houses bright colours, and many of the shops and cafes in this area have an arty bent. It’s a great place to wander about looking for interesting photo opportunities and unique souvenirs.
For a more traditional excursion visit the Buddhist temple at Beomeo-sa. It’s a beautiful calm oasis in the middle of the urban jungle and its location on a forested mountainside means it feels a world away from the modern day. For a real experience of temple life, book to stay overnight. You can learn zen meditation, chat with the monks or just listen to the sounds of chanting drifting over through the trees.
