DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Cairo

One of the world’s most ancient cities, Cairo is home to giant pyramids as well as modern skyscrapers. After the political turmoil of 2011 tourism has reduced, which offers a unique chance to experience some of the world’s most famous landmarks without the usual crowds and expense.

At almost 4000 years old, the pyramids at Giza are the only remaining wonder of the ancient world. Built as tombs for the pharoahs, they are incredible feats of engineering. It’s almost impossible to imagine how to build such enormous and precise structures without modern technology, which shows just how ingenious and well organised the ancient Egyptians were. Nearby the pyramids you can also find the Sphinx, as well as numerous other small tombs and temples.

If you’re interested to find out more about ancient Egypt, the Egyptian Museum has plenty to show you. There’s guilded and jewelled artefacts from Tutankhamun’s tomb as well as mummified pets and household objects that give a glimpse in to the life of everyday Egyptians. Alternatively, if retail therapy is more your thing, then Khan Al Khalili is the place to head to. This market complex sells everything imaginable, with the gold and spice areas of the market being particularly interesting.
