Cancun is one of Mexico’s premier tourist destinations. Jutting in to the Caribbean sea on Mexico’s easternmost point, it has a well developed resort area with hotels, bars and restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as supreme beaches. However the town away from the hotel sector is also well worth a visit, not to mention the surrounding area of Quintana Roo.

One of Cancun’s most unique attractions is the underwater art museum. Built to attract divers away from the fragile coral reefs in this area, the museum consists of over 475 statues embedded into the ocean floor. As well as admiring the sculptures, divers can see plenty of marine life and even new reefs beginning to form around the structures which were made from coral-friendly materials. Some of the works can even be viewed from a glass bottomed boat if diving is not your thing.

For more wildlife spotting, take a boat to Isla Contoy. It’s home to hundreds of bird species, including pelicans and flamingoes. There are often whale sharks, manta rays and turtles in the waters surrounding the island, which is designated as a national park. Visitor numbers are restricted to 200 per day so you’re guaranteed a peaceful and sustainable visit.
