DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Cartagena

Perched on Colombia’s northern coast looking out into the Caribbean Sea, Cartagena is one of Latin America’s most atmospheric cities. Much of the colonial old town has been preserved, creating a fairy-tale cobbled centre lined with welcoming bars and cafes, still surrounded by centuries-old city walls.

Get your bearing with a walk around the city walls. Taking nearly 200 years to build between pirate raids and tropical storms, these impressive defenses surrounded the centre of Cartagena. Continuing on the military theme, head up San Lazaro hill to the Castillo de San Felipe. As well as great views and a cooling breeze, there’s a maze of secret underground tunnels to explore.

Back at sea-level, the port at Pegasos retains the old world feel of the city centre. Watch fishing boats unloading their catch, or book on to a cruiser to visit nearby islands. Many of these islands are in a protected national park, so expect crystal clear water, white sandy beaches, fantastic diving and dense mangrove forest teeming with wildlife.
