Florence is the ultimate destination for anyone with an interest in how the modern world came about. Styling itself as the “cradle of the Renaissance” it was home to Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo and Giotto’s revolutionary ideas while the Medici family and Machiavelli set the rules of modern politics. On top of that, Florence was where Galileo begun what we now call astronomy and a major trading post.

Art lovers will be in heaven with world-class galleries to explore. The Uffizi, the Accademia and the Pitti Palace contain some of the most influential and famous artworks ever made. The quantity of incredible work is so concentrated that doctors now recognise “Florence Syndrome”; where a person becomes overwhelmed by emotion on seeing so many beautiful objects.

Florence itself is a very attractive city. Head up the Duomo for breathtaking views over the rooftops towards the surrounding hills. Alternatively climb the steps to San Miniato al Monte for a panoramic city vista including the cathedral and iconic dome.
