The island of Bali in Indonesia is synonymous with lush rainforests, mystic temples and stunning beaches. Add in luxury hotels, budget hostels and a super-friendly local culture to give a superb destination for any traveler looking for some rest and relaxation.

If you’re in Bali looking for spiritual enhancement, start in Ubud and head up into the central hills. Ubud has it’s fair share of upmarket hotels and spas, although cheaper options are available. Get a taste for Balinese culture at the Agung Rai Museum of Art before heading to a spa for a traditional Balinese style massage. Finally head over to Pura Dalem to watch the nightly dance performances. In the hills above Ubud find the ritual springs at Pura Tirta Empul. This temple is over 1000 years old and features a bathing area used for purification ceremonies. Alternatively, visit one of the many waterfall bathing pools. Banyu Wana Amertha is surrounded by coffee plantations and is particularly good looking.

Surf enthusiasts should head to the Bukit peninsula. The waves on this part of the island are consistently fierce, so only experienced surfers should venture out. If beach bars and the surf lifestyle are more your thing than actual breaks, Jimbaran Bay and the nearby Rock Bar will hit the spot. Check out Jimbaran fish market one morning to see local fishermen bringing their catch ashore. Buy a fish then ask one of the many street food stalls to cook it for you for guaranteed freshness.
