DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Johannesburg

As the home town of both Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu, Johannesburg is a completely different type of South African adventure than you might expect.

For visitors wishing to understand more about apartheid, there are three key places to visit. Firstly is the exceptional Apartheid Museum. Here you can learn more about how apartheid was enforced and see the devastating effects it had. There’s also hope in the inspiring stories of the activists who fought for equality. Constitution Hill was an infamous prison during apartheid and both Nelson Mandela and Gandhi were imprisoned here. The fort is now a series of exhibitions about the terrible conditions endured by prisoners, but again hope can be found in the Flame of Democracy.

Finally head out of town to visit Soweto, the township where Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu both lived. Nelson Mandela’s former house, a tiny brick shack still scarred with bullet holes and scorch marks from attacks, now contains memorabilia and displays about the life and work of Mandela.
