DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Macau
Perched on the Pearl River opposite Hong Kong, Macau is a former Portugese colony that is now part of China. Known as the “Las Vegas of China” Macau is famous for its high end casinos and luxury hotels but there’s also lots of historical and cultural things to see and do as well.
To find out more about Macau’s Portugese links, head to the ruins of St Paul’s Church. Only the facade of this 17th century church remains, after a huge fire destroyed the main building. Built by exiled Japanese Christians to designs by an Italian architect, the intricately sculpted facade shows scenes from the life of Jesus alongside Japanese explanations of the scenes.
Macau is also a great destination for events. Two of the biggest events are the Grand Prix in November or the International Fireworks Contest in September. There’s also arts festivals, a marathon and a huge range of religious festivals covering both Eastern and Western traditions.
