Despite the rumblings in the Crimea, life in Kiev continues apace. Located in the north of Ukraine, the city combines hip cafes and a thriving art scene with historic streets and great value for money. If you’re looking for the next Prague, look no further.

The city’s biggest attraction is St Sophia’s cathedral. Founded in 1011, many of the mosaics and decorations inside the building date from this period. A 6 metre gilded representation of the Virgin Mary is particularly impressive, as are the views from the cathedral’s baroque bell tower.

For a glimpse into more recent history, head out of town to Mezhyhirya, the former home of Viktor Yanukovych. Ousted from power by a revolution in 2014, the manor house and extensive grounds show Yanukovych’s wannabe dictator tastes, and are now on display as testimony to the corruption of his government.
