DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Manila
Manila is the capital of the Philippines and often overlooked as a destination. It’s well worth looking beyond the terrible traffic and rows of shanty houses to discover this unique Asian city.
The Philippines were under Spanish colonial rule for over 300 years. Discover more about this period in the Intramuros neigbourhood of Manila. There’s Fort Santiago, a former prison that is now houses a museum covering the various resistance fighters imprisoned here. Follow the story of Dr Jose Rizal from his trial, imprisonment and then over to Rizal Park for his execution.
Rizal Park is more than just a monument to a national hero. It’s a pleasant place to stroll, play chess and locals gather each morning to learn t’ai chi or arnis, a local martial art using sticks. Head over at the weekend for a free rock concert on Saturdays and a classical concert on Sundays.
