DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Saly
Saly in Senegal has long been a popular beach destination for French travelers and has plenty to offer families looking for a more adventurous break. The country has been independent since the 1960s and is one of the safest and most peaceful countries in West Africa. As well as the wildlife, beaches and colonial history found throughout West Africa, Senegal is also notable for its thriving arts and music scene.
There are plenty of large resorts and hotels in Saly, so there’s no need to rough it. There are also a growing number of eco-lodges for those wishing to get closer to nature on their trip. Saly’s star attraction is the beach and the Atlantic ocean. Consistent small waves make this coastline ideal for learning to surf and other watersports such as sailing or deep-sea fishing.
The other big attraction in this area is the Siné-Saloum delta, a huge network of mangrove lagoons, salt flats and shallow waterways that is a haven for wildlife. Marvel at the strange baobab trees, supposedly turned upside down by the devil, or kayak through the still lagoons spotting monkeys, pelicans, flamingoes, manatees and even dolphins.
