DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Venice

Situated on a lagoon in northern Italy, Venice is a must-see destination. More like something out of a fairytale than a living, working city, the buildings appear to float on the water. From the awe-inspiring Grand Canal to hidden backstreet islands, Venice’s reputation is well deserved.

St Mark’s Square and the cathedral are the first stop for many visitors. The square also contains the Doge’s Palace and several museums and monuments. The extravagant cathedral was originally built as the Doge’s private chapel, and even the most jaded visitor is bound to be impressed by the acres of mosaic, bejeweled altars and 24-carat gold ceilings.

For a part of Venice away from the masses, head to the original ghetto. From 1516, Jews in the city were only allowed to live in one district – the Foundry, or “getto” in Italian. This segregation continued in some form until the 20th Century. Take a tour to see inside the beautiful synagogues, before paying your respects at the moving World War Two memorial.
