DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: St Petersburg

After Peter the Great returned from visiting Europe in 17th Century, he decided to build a European style city to boost Russia’s links with western Europe. St Petersburg is the result, with grand boulevards, winding canals and impressive neoclassical buildings at every turn.

St Petersburg has been at the centre of Russian history ever since. You can visit the palace where Rasputin was murdered, see the battleship that fired the shot that started the Bolshevik revolution or learn more about the World War Two seige that caused millions of casualties and deaths. Even the iconic onion domes of the
Church of the Saviour were built to commemorate an assassination.

For many people, the must see attraction of St Petersburg is the Hermitage museum. As well as containing a vast collection of artworks and decorative objects, the museum itself is housed in the former imperial palace. There’s even a “collection” of cats that live in the grounds of the palace.
