Stockholm, the capital of Sweden is spread over 14 islands where Lake Maleren meets the Baltic Sea. As well as being the largest city in Scandinavia it is also one of the greenest cities in the world – a huge stretch of land to the east of the city is designated as a National Park.

The heart of the city is the Gamla Stan, or Old Town. It’s a fortified island and home to Kungliga castle, which is still used as a government building and royal residence. Book on to a tour to explore the richly decorated rooms and perhaps catch a glimpse of the changing of the guard ceremony.

Sweden is famous for its design skills. Check out a comprehensive history of Swedish art and culture at the Nordiska museum. Here you can see traditional clothing, ceremonial objects made by the nomadic Sami people, and modern household items as well as artworks by some of Sweden’s most famous artists. If that wasn’t enough, a trawl of the shops in Kungsgaten is bound to turn up some design classics to take home.
