DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Los Angeles

Los Angeles is an oddity of a city. Despite the huge amount of tv and films made here, the city doesn’t have very many iconic tourist attractions beyond the Hollywood sign. The city sprawls from the ocean to the mountains and over into the valley and with no walkable central district, visitors need a car to explore properly.

However L.A is not without its charms. Unusually for a city known for endless suburbs, nature always feels close at hand. There are a wealth of Pacific ocean beaches, from rocky bluffs where you can watch dolphins, to crowded hotspots such as Venice Beach. There’s also great breaks for surfing and body boarding, but the water is a little too cold for most to swim.

Alternatively, hike up the canyon paths in Griffith Park to the observatory. As well as fascinating displays about the workings of the universe, the observatory has an enviable view over the city, mountains and ocean. Visit at sunset on a clear day to see the LA skyline backlit by the sinking sun, then borrow the telescopes brought out by observatory staff to get a closer look at the stars.
