DAILY TRAVEL INSPIRATION: Sofia

Reputedly Europe’s most affordable city, Sofia offers great value for the adventurous traveller. There are rowdy backpacker beerhalls if that is your scene but there are also plenty of more sedate attractions too.

The capital of Bulgaria has been inhabited for over 2000 years and has been under the control of several empires and cultures during that time. You can find Roman ruins or Soviet apartment blocks and pretty much everything inbetween. Visit the National Archaelogical Museum to find out more about ancient Sofia. Alternatively you can see 1000 year old murals in the tiny Rotunda of Saint George, which is Sofia’s oldest building. Once a pagan temple, it’s now used as a church.

Make sure you sample some of Bulgaria’s food. Head to the Central Market Hall to pick up delicious meats and cheeses for a picnic in one of Sofia’s many parks. If the weather isn’t favourable then head to a bar to watch the world go by over a glass of rakia, a traditional homemade brandy.
